ANN ARBOR, Michigan --Â Despite allowing the fewest goals in one game this season, the Marist water polo team fell to the #8 University of Michigan Wolverines on Sunday morning.
The Wolverines' nine goals scored was three less than the Red Foxes previous season low for goals allowed and the match marked the first time in six games this year that Marist did not allow a power goal.
SUMMARY:
The Red Foxes opened the scoring 1:40 into the game when junior
Grace Doerfler scored her team leading eighth goal of the season off an assist from sophomore
Justine Castro. The lead didn' last long though as Michigan answered 25 seconds later to even the score at 1-1. After strong defensive efforts by both teams, the Wolverines took their first lead at the 1:49 mark with an even strength goal but Marist answered back 19 seconds later on a score by sophomore
Anais Mathes.Â
With the score tied at 2-2 to begin the second quarter, both defenses again stepped up keeping the game tied until the 3:49 mark when Michigan scored to take a 3-2 lead. Less than a minute later, the Red Foxes again tied the game when freshman
Aminadi Anorve found the back of the net for her third goal of the year.Â
With 16 minutes left in regulation and the game tied at 3-3, the Wolverines scored three unanswered goals in the first 5:42 of the third quarter to take their biggest lead of the day. A goal by junior co-captain
Katherine Tijerina brought the deficit back to two goals with 21 seconds left, however, Michigan regained the three goal lead on a score with three seconds left in the period.Â
Tijerina's second goal of the game and the first power play goal for either team, brought Marist back within two at the 6:44 mark in the fourth but the Wolverines answered right back just over a minute later. With 4:13 left in the game, junior
Susan Cantoni trimmed the deficit back to two goals, however again Michigan answered and regained the three goal lead. Despite a valiant effort by the Red Foxes to tie the game in the final two plus minutes, the Wolverines defense stepped up and kept Marist out of the goal to hold on for the 9-6 win.Â
