POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – When the Marist football team hosts Davidson on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m., the Red Foxes will be participating in a #SetTheExpectation Game.
Â
#SetTheExpectation is a campaign that engages male athletes and their coaches as the solution to end sexual assault and physical violence. The Red Foxes' #SetTheExpectation game is a result of the partnership between the Marist Center for Student-Athlete Enhancement and campaign leader Brenda Tracy, who has traveled to college campuses across the country to deliver her message.
Â
There are several ways Saturday's #SetTheExpectation Game will be visible and able to be supported.
Marist football players will wear teal and purple ribbons on their helmets. Coaches will wear #SetTheExpectation t-shirts. There will also be a community pledge for fans to sign.
Five former Marist football players – Dan Smith, Al Ruiz, Terrence Turner, Brandon Kicklighter, and Zach Quarles – will be honored in a special ceremony during the game. In 2008, Smith and Ruiz brought the White Ribbon Campaign to Marist. The White Ribbon Campaign is a global movement aimed to ending violence against women. Marist has continued with the campaign in the 10 years since its initial edition, with Turner, Kicklighter, and Quarles taking leadership roles during their playing careers.
The Red Foxes will be raising money for Grace Smith House, a private not-for-profit domestic violence agency which provides services to victims of domestic violence and their children. A GoFundMe page is available
here. Marist's student club, the purplethread, will be selling bracelets and donating all proceeds to Grace Smith House.
