POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist water polo team dropped its regular season finale vs the Wagner Seahawks by a final score of 12-9 on Sunday morning at La Salle.

With the loss, the Red Foxes end the regular season at 19-16 (12-2 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference). They will be the #2 seed in the MAAC Championship and will play the #3 seed (Iona Gaels/VMI Keydets) in the semi-finals on Saturday, April 29th at McCann Natatorium.

SUMMARY VS WAGNER:

The Seahawks opened the game with three straight goals in the opening 3:35, before junior Grace Doerfler got Marist on the board a man up goal at the 4:03 mark. Wagner answered with two more goals before the period expired and took a 5-1 lead into the second quarter.

A goal just 18 seconds in gave the Seahawks a six goal lead, before four straight Red Fox goals from junior co-captain Katherine Tijerina (3) and Doerfler trimmed the deficit to 6-5. However, Wagner closed out the half with back-to-back goals to bring an 8-5 lead to the half.

Junior Ariana Singer brought Marist back to within two with a goal 1:27 into the second half but the Seahawks answered with three straight over the next 1:44 to extend its lead back to five. Sophomore Carolyn Gauvin made it a four goal game with a score 26 seconds later and the two teams headed into the final eight minutes with Wagner holding an 11-7 advantage.

Freshman Lauren Smith found the back of the net 5:12 into the final quarter but the Seahawks answered with a goal 37 seconds later. Singer brought the Red Foxes back within three 21 seconds after but that was as close as Marist would come and Wagner emerged with the 12-9 win.

  • Marist went 4-for-13 on the man up, while Wagner went 3-for-7
