Marist Softball Continues Playoff Push In New Jersey

Red Foxes To Play At Monmouth, Rider This Weekend

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist softball team (23-27 overall, 8-8 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) concludes the regular season this weekend with a trip to New Jersey for a pair of doubleheaders.

On Saturday, the Red Foxes will face first-place Monmouth (25-14, 15-1). Marist will then face Rider (16-30, 7-9) on Sunday. First pitch of game one on both days is scheduled for noon.

Sunday is the final day of the regular season. The MAAC's top six finishers will qualify for the conference championship, which begins on Wednesday, May 9 and is hosted by the #1 seed.

A lot remains unsettled going into the final weekend. Here's a closer look:
  • Monmouth is the only team which has clinched a playoff berth. The Hawks can wrap up the #1 seed, and serve as tournament host, with either one more win or one more loss by both Siena (11-5) and Fairfield (11-5). Monmouth hosts Siena on Sunday.
  • At 8-8, Marist currently stands in fifth place. Five teams sit one just game behind the Red Foxes, including Manhattan (8-10), Quinnipiac (7-9), Rider (7-9), Niagara (7-9), and Canisius (7-9).
  • Including Iona (9-7), there are seven teams within two games of each other in the standings.
  • With Monmouth being the only team that has clinched, nine teams remain in the contention for the final five berths in the tournament.

Marist enters Saturday's doubleheader on a four-game winning streak. The Red Foxes are coming off doubleheader sweeps of Saint Peter's on Sunday and Lafayette on Wednesday. On Wednesday, Kourtney Paul had the first two-homer game of her career, and Brittany Colombo had five hits on the day.

Monmouth has won six straight. Most recently, the Hawks prevailed at Niagara by scores of 3-1 and 2-1 (in eight innings) on Wednesday. Katie Baron leads Monmouth in batting average (.419), homers (eight), and RBIs (34). In the circle, Amanda Riley is 16-5 with a 2.39 ERA and 172 strikeouts in 143.2 innings.

Rider will host Siena on Saturday before Marist comes to town on Sunday. Six Broncs are hitting .300 this season, with Elyse Cuttic just behind at .299. Cuttic is the team leader in homers (six) and RBIs (28), and also leads the pitching staff with seven wins and 127.2 innings pitched.
