POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist Athletics Department has released the women's basketball team's non-conference schedule. The Red Foxes will play 12 games outside of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play, including a trip to play in the Nashville Shootout in Nashville, Tennessee.
Marist will open its season on Sunday, Nov. 11 at Navy. Overall, the Red Foxes will play four home games, five away games, and three games at a neutral site. Of the Red Foxes 12 opponents, eight of them played in postseason tournaments last year.
Here is a closer look at the Red Foxes' non-conference opponents:
Sunday, Nov. 11 – at Navy
- This will be the second consecutive season-opening meeting against Navy. The Red Foxes dropped that opener as Navy came back to win 77-70 at McCann Arena.
- Before last year's game the two teams had last met in the 2000-01 season. Navy came away with a 66-59 win on Dec. 1, 2000.
- This is the fourth all-time meeting with Navy. The Red Foxes won the first meeting on Dec. 20, 1999, 66-65.
Friday, Nov. 16 – vs. Boston University
- Marist is 8-5 all-time vs. the Terriers. The two programs have played annually since the 2008-09 season.
- The Red Foxes traveled to BU last season and left with a dominant 80-52 victory.
Sunday, Nov. 18 – vs. Temple
- The Owls are 3-1 all-time against Marist after defeating the Red Foxes 83-77 last year.
- Before last season, the Red Foxes and Owls had not met since 2000-01, when the two teams squared off in the 2014-15 Postseason WNIT, Marist's first appearance in the tournament.
Friday, Saturday, & Sunday Nov. 23 - 25 – vs. Stetson, Wright State, Hofstra | Nashville Shootout
- The Red Foxes and Hatters last met in the 2014-15 Basketball Travelers Classic hosted by Baylor in Waco, Texas. The Hatters came out with a 57-50 win and are 2-0 over Marist all-time
- This will be the Red Foxes first meeting with Wright State.
- Marist is 1-6 against Hofstra all-time. The last meeting against Hofstra came in the 2016-17 season opener. Hofstra emerged with a 62-42 win.
- Both Stetson and Wright State were postseason teams from last season, playing in the WBI and WNIT respectively.
Friday, Nov. 30 – at Elon
- This will be the first time in program history that the Red Foxes will take on Elon.
- Elon is coming off a postseason appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Sunday, Dec. 2 – at Duke
- The Red Foxes are 0-2 against the Blue Devils in the all-time series.
- The last meeting during the 2010-11 season in the second round of the NCAA Tournament was a thriller from start to finish. Duke narrowly escaped with a 71-66 victory at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
- Duke is another team the Red Foxes will face that participated in postseason play last season, making it to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen before falling to UConn.
Saturday, Dec. 8 – at Albany
- Marist and Albany renew their rivalry, facing off for the first time since the 2014-15 season.
- The Red Foxes pulled out a tight one at McCann, defeating the Great Danes 61-58.
- Albany participated in postseason play last season, falling to Penn in the WNIT first round.
Saturday, Dec. 15 – at Princeton
- The Red Foxes travel to take on perennial mid-major power Princeton with a week of rest and preparation.
- The Tigers are 3-1 in the team's all-time series with Princeton winning the last matchup in convincing fashion, 77-44, on the road at McCann Arena.
- Princeton made an appearance in last season's NCAA Tournament, falling in the first round to Maryland, 77-57.
Tuesday, Dec. 18 – vs Northeastern
- After last season's meeting in which Northeastern won at home 78-72, the Huskies hold a 4-3 advantage in the all-time series, which initiated in the 1984-85 season.
- After meeting again the next year (1985-86) the series reconvened in 2008-09 and 2009-10 and again in 2013-14 and 2014-15.
- In a 2013-14 matchup, the Red Foxes defeated Northeastern 103-66, eclipsing 100 points in a game for the first time in head coach Brian Giorgis' tenure.
- Northeastern was a participant in the WBI last season.
Saturday, Dec. 29 – vs UMass
- This Red Foxes and UMass met for the first time last season with Marist winning decisively, 88-60, to close out its non-conference schedule.
- In last season's game, the Red Foxes amassed a 26-0 run that started with 3:17 left in the first half and spanned to 4:15 to go in the third quarter. Overall Marist outscored UMass 37-9 in the third quarter.
- The game against the Minutewomen again marks the conclusion of the Red Foxes non-conference slate.
All game times, along with Marist's MAAC schedule, will be released at a later date.
The Marist women's basketball team will be heading into its 17
th year under the leadership of head coach
Brian Giorgis in 2018-19. Giorgis has led the Red Foxes to 10 MAAC championships and 12 berths in postseason play, including a trip to the WNIT last season.
