TEMPE, Arizona - Marist water polo kicked off the season at perennially-ranked ASU, falling 16-8 at Sun Devil Fitness Complex in their only official match of the weekend.Â

- Sophomore defender Aminadi Anorve scored two goals on two shots to pick up where she left off with her 15-goal season last year.
- Sophomore center Lauren Smith was the other Red Fox with multiple goals, scoring two on three shots.Â
- All-MAAC Second Team honoree Justine Castro had a goal and two assists against the Sun Devils to provide support to her teammates.
- Megan Clarke and Anais Mathes each recorded a goal, and freshman Kathryn McCullough scored the first of her career for the Red Foxes.
- Carsen Horvatich made six saves in goal for and tallied a steal as well.
- ASU had the advantage in shots with 28 compared to the Red Foxes' 19.
- The Sun Devils took the second match over the Red Foxes as well, 10-5.
- Marist led the game for a time and had the advantage in shots 28-27, but could not convert them for an advantage in the final score.
- Preseason All-MAAC center Grace Doerfler scored a game-high three goals on six shots.
- Anais Mathes recorded another goal and Susan Cantoni found the back of the net for her first of the weekend.
- Carsen Horvatich and Marina Hyham shared the net for Marist, making four and five saves and finding a steal each.
- The Red Foxes had the opportunity to play a pair of matches with the Chinese National team, and fell in the first 22-6.
- Smith, Tijerina, Cantoni, Lexi Puhl, Katelin Harris and Jocelyn Castro all recorded goals for Marist.
- Horvatich and Hope Vickers guarded the goal and blocked two and three shots respectively against the international competitors.
- In the final game of the weekend, the Red Foxes battled China once again to a final score of 23-6 in a loss to the 2018 Asian Games Champions.
- Smith, Lizotte, Puhl, Gauvin and both Castros each scored once again for Marist.
- Vickers and Horvatich were the goalkeepers and made two and three saves, with Horvatich recording a steal.

Chris Vidale. "We are fortunate to be able to have these early games to prepare us for this coming season. We are setting the foundation for a successful year."

Marist water polo travels to Hawaii for the Rainbow Invitational on Jan. 19-20. The team is scheduled to play Hawaii, San Diego State and Sonoma State over the two-day competition.
