STATEN ISLAND, New York - #20 Marist water polo (13-12, 4-1 MAAC) defeated Villanova (8-10, 3-1 MAAC) and Iona (9-14, 3-3 MAAC) on the first day of the Seahawk Invitational. The Red Foxes topped the Wildcats 11-8, and came back later to beat the Gaels 13-7.
 

VILLANOVA SUMMARY

• Villanova scored the first goal of the game, but Marist took back the lead and consistently led by multiple points to earn the win.
• Ariana Singer erupted with a four goal performance while also grabbing a steal.
• Aminadi Anorve added two goals on two shots.
• Lauren Smith, Anais Mathes, Susan Cantoni, Katherine Tijerina and Carolyn Gauvin each scored once for the Red Foxes to outlast the Wildcats.
• Carsen Horvatich made five saves in the net.
• Villanova shot 47.1 percent compared to Marist's 45.8 percent, but were held to 17 shots while the Red Foxes took 24.

IONA SUMMARY

• The teams had a close game through the first quarter, but Marist held Iona to just one goal each in the second and third periods to have a 9-4 lead entering the fourth.
• Grace Doerfler, Anorve, Mathes and Tijerina each scored twice in the win over the Gaels.
• Cantoni, Justine Castro, Myriam Lizotte, Lexi Puhl and Gabi Gervasi recorded a goal apiece to lift the Red Foxes.
• Carsen Horvatich blocked seven shots for a save percentage of 50.0.
• Both squads took 23 shots, but Marist shot 56.5 percent while Iona was held to 26.1 percent.
