CHARLESTON, South Carolina – The Marist softball team will participate in the Charleston Invitational this. The teams the Red Foxes are scheduled to face include North Carolina State, Bryant, Rhode Island, Youngstown State, and the College of Charleston.
The Red Foxes are 3-3 overall so far this season.
The tournament will open up on Friday, March 8. Marist is scheduled to play its first game at 10 a.m. against North Carolina State University. Later in the same day, the Red Foxes will take on Bryant University, with first pitch scheduled for 2:30 p.m. On Saturday, March 9, Marist will face the University of Rhode Island at 11:15 a.m., and then take on the College of Charleston at 3:45 p.m. The Red Foxes will close out the tournament with a game against Youngstown State University on Sunday, March 10. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
The Red Foxes participated in their first tournament of the 2019 season last weekend, traveling to Tennessee to participate in the TSU Winter Warm Up Tournament. Marist went 1-3 on the weekend, defeating Tennessee State 6-2 in the first game of the tournament. However, the Red Foxes went 0-3 the rest of the way, dropping games to East Tennessee State, Portland State, and North Alabama to close out the weekend. Junior
Ali Milam continued her hot streak, going 8-for-13 over the weekend, with four doubles, four RBIs, and four runs scored. Freshman
Kaley Coltrain also had a great weekend, going 7-for-12 with four doubles, six RBIs, and three walks. Freshman
Calista Phippen got the win in Marist's victory over TSU, going six strong innings, striking out two and allowing just two earned runs. Milam and Coltrain were honored by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference for their performance, earning MAAC Player of the Week and MAAC Rookie of the Week, respectively.
North Carolina state is 11-7 overall, and 2-2 in neural sites. Most recently, they competed in the NC State Invitational, in which they went 4-1. They won their first four games, and then lost the final game of the weekend to Valparaiso 4-0. Brigette Nordberg is batting .451 and leading the team with 11 homers and 27 RBIs. Logan Morris is also in double digits with 12 RBIs and has 5 homers. Devin Wallace leads the pitching staff with a 1.92 ERA and 1.16 WHIP. She has five complete games, and 58 K's in 54.2 innings pitched.
The Bulldogs are winless this season, losing their first nine games. Last game they were 5-1 by Belmont on Saturday, February 23. Tiffany Bell leads the team with a .269 average in 26 at bats. Alexandra Hickey has the only homerun for the Bulldogs this season. Gabrielle Ermish leads the pitching staff with a 1.88 ERA and one complete game.
Rhode Island is 2-8 on the season and are currently on a six-game losing streak. The team most recently competed in the Cardinal Classic, in which they went 0-5. Art Castillo leads the team with a .355 average and 11 hits. Becca Rogers leads the pitching staff with a 2.95 ERA and 20 strikeouts.
College of Charleston is 9-9 overall on the season, and 6-3 at home. Last time out, they participated in the Green and White Invitational, in which they went 2-2. Madi Brown leads the team with a .396 average and 21 hits. She also has 11 runs scored, a homer, and eight RBIs. Izzy Berouty leads the staff with a 3.82 ERA and has a 2-4 record. She has thrown 36.2 innings and has 11 strikeouts and just 47 hits allowed.
Youngstown State is also winless on the season, losing its first seven games. Most recently, they competed in the Charlotte First Pitch Classic, going 0-3, including losses to Winthrop, Charlotte, and South Carolina. Yazmine Romero leads the team with .286 batting average and six hits. Maddi Lusk has both of the homeruns for Youngstown this season. Addy Jarvis has a 5.53 ERA, leading the pitching staff among eligible pitchers. She has struck out 18 batters in 19 innings.
The Red Foxes will participate in the 2019 Causeway Classic from March 15-17. Marist will take on the likes of Fairleigh Dickinson, Sacramento State, and California Davis.
