John Dunne has announced the signing of five newcomers. Jack Cavanaugh, Henry Mayen Makeny, Tyler Sagl, Tyler St. Furcy, and Zion Tordoff will be joining the program for the 2019-20 season.
Cavanaugh, Makeny, Sagl, and St. Furcy are joining the Red Foxes as true freshmen with four years of eligibility. Tordoff will have two years of eligibility after transferring from Casper College, and is eligible immediately.
"We're really excited about this incoming class, and the future of our program," Dunne said. "This class has a nice variety of players in terms of positions and strengths. We love their length and athleticism, and they all touch on different areas of need for us. They are all great character guys who care about academics. I strongly believe the Marist community will find it easy to root for this group."
In his senior season, Cavanaugh helped Sparta win its conference, league, and county championships as the team earned a #1 seed in the state championships. He averaged 14 points, seven assists, and five rebounds per game while being named All-Area Player of the Year and to the New Jersey North/South All-Star Game. As a junior, Cavanaugh averaged 16 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two blocks per game, and he was First Team All-Conference and Third Team All-State. Head coach Joseph Mantegna said, "Henry is the single best defender we have had since Royal Ivey, who played 11 years in the NBA. All the kid does is make unselfish, winning plays."
In his senior season, Sagl averaged 26.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game. This past January, Sagl was named the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association Player of the Month after averaging 36.3 points, 5.3 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game.
