Volleyball Heads to California for Final Tournament of the Season

Red Foxes Participating in the SJSU/SCU Tournament this Weekend

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist volleyball team is heading out west this weekend, kicking off their third and final tournament of the 2019 season. The Red Foxes are traveling to California for the SJSU/SCU Tournament this weekend, and will be playing in Santa Clara on Friday, and then San Jose on Saturday.
 
SCHEDULE
  • The Red Foxes open the bracket with two matches on Friday, September 13 against Northern Colorado at 3 p.m. and Santa Clara at 9 p.m.
  • Marist has one more match on the slate for Saturday, September 14. The Red Foxes are scheduled to take on San Jose State at 5 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
  • Last weekend, Marist traveled to Smithfield, Rhode Island for the Hampton Inn-Vitational.
  • The Red Foxes dropped the opener of the tournament 3-0 to Villanova on Friday, September 6.
  • Marist then played North Dakota on Saturday, September 7, but dropped a tightly contested match 3-2 despite an impressive 44 assists from freshman Halle Carter.
  • The Red Foxes lost the final match of the tournament 3-0 to Bryant later that night.
 
A LOOK AT THE RECORD BOOK
  • Senior Nikki DeSerpa moved up on the all-time kills list last weekend, passing Heather Vir and moving into sole possession of ninth place with 954 career kills.
  • DeSerpa is just seven kills away from tying Mackenzie Stephens for eighth place on the list, and eight kills away from sole possession of eighth place.
  • Creeping up on the same list is senior Megan Fergus. She is now just 98 kills away from passing Vir and taking sole possession of 10th place.
 
SCOUTING NORTHERN COLORADO
  • Last time Northern Colorado took the court was in the UNIWYO Invite last weekend. During the tournament the Bears went 2-1, winning their first two games against the College of Charleston and the University of Buffalo, while losing to the University of Wyoming in their final match.
  • The Bears have opened the season 4-2, after going 15-14 with a 10-7 conference record in 2018.
  • Taylor Muff and Kailey Jo Ince lead the team in scoring with 79 and 77 kills, respectively. Daisy Schultz has been a dominate passer for the bears with 288 assists thus far, 278 more than the next player on the team.
 
SCOUTING SANTA CLARA
  • The Fresno State Invitational last weekend was the last time Santa Clara took the court. During the tournament the Broncos went 2-1, winning their first two games against California State University at Northridge and California State Bakersfield while losing to the host, Fresno State.
  • Santa Clara has come out of the gates strong, starting off 6-1. The six wins already matches the Broncos 2018 win total, as Santa Clara went 6-24 overall and 1-17 in conference play last year.
  • Julia Sangiacomo leads the Broncos attack with 90 kills in her first seven games. Liliana Light (154) and Michelle Shaffer (142) lead the team in assists, while Gretchen Reinert leads Santa Clara with 108 digs.
 
SCOUTING SAN JOSE STATE
  • San Jose State went 2-1 in the ShareSLO Mustang Challenge its last time out. The Spartans defeated Wichita State University and the University of North Texas, but lost to California Poly in their final game of the weekend.
  • It's been an average start to the season for San Jose State going 3-3, after finishing 16-11, and 11-7 in conference play, last season.
  • The kills leader for the Spartans is Haylee Nelson with 71 through the first six games. Mamie Garard and Kaitlynn Zdroik have combined for 218 assists, 112 for Garard and 106 for Zdroik, leading San jose State. 
 
UP NEXT
The Red Foxes head back to Poughkeepsie for their 2019 home opener on Friday, September 20. Marist will take on the Fairfield Stags, in what will also be the Red Foxes' first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match of the season.
