POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - Over the next four weeks, the Marist softball preview will run with a position-by-position look at the 2020 Red Foxes. The preview opens with the pitching staff.
Â
Calista Phippen enters her sophomore year after an outstanding freshman season that saw her earn the following accolades:
Â
- NFCA Top 25 Freshman
- MAAC Co-Rookie of the Year
- First Team All-MAAC
- MAAC All-Rookie Team
- Second Team NFCA All-Region
- Four-time MAAC Rookie of the Week
- Two-time MAAC Pitcher of the Week
Â
In 2019, Phippen went 19-5 with a 1.48 earned run average and 190 strikeouts in 160.1 innings pitched. The earned run average was the lowest by a Red Fox since 2006. The strikeout and win totals were the best by a Marist pitcher since 2008.
Â
The lone upperclassmen on the Red Foxes' pitching staff is junior
Nicole Teague. In her first two seasons as a Red Fox, Teague has six wins and five saves in 125.1 innings pitched. She has often saved her best for the biggest games. As a freshman, she was named to the MAAC All-Tournament Team after earning two wins and not allowing an earned run over 14 innings. Last year, she earned a save in the Red Foxes' tournament victory over Niagara.
Â
Marist will carry four pitchers this season, and two of them are freshmen.
Â
Kiley Myers comes to Marist from Latrobe, Pennsylvania.
Meghan Haff joins the Red Foxes from Milford, New Jersey.
Â
Head coach
Joe Ausanio expects both Myers and Haff to contribute this season.
Â
Marist lost three pitchers to graduation.
Â
- Megan Beiermeister won 45 games from 2016-19, the fourth-highest total in program history.
- Kallen Leeseberg graduated with the eighth-highest strikeout total (243) in program history.
- Brooke Peterson had 10 career wins and pitched 163.2 innings as a Red Fox.
Â
"We're really excited for our pitching staff this year," Ausanio said. "We have a great nucleus coming back with Nicole and Calista, and we have two freshmen who are going to help us at some point this year in
Kiley Myers and
Meghan Haff."
