POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Junior guard
Matt Herasme of the Marist men's basketball team was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Student-Athlete of the Week on Wednesday.
Â
Herasme is an integral part of the Marist men's basketball team's success both on and off the court. A Business Administration major, Herasme was named to the MAAC All-Academic Team and MAAC Academic Honor Roll last season.
Â
In his sophomore year of 2019-20, Herasme raised his scoring average 5.9 points from his freshman year, which was the fourth-highest gain of any player in the conference. He ranked in the conference's top 10 in steals, three-point percentage, three-pointers per game, defensive rebounds per game, and minutes per game.
Â
Throughout his career, Herasme has provided strong intensity on the defensive end of the floor. In a recent Poughkeepsie Journal story, head coach
John Dunne said Herasme's "ability to focus on a scouting report and put forth maximum effort to carry out that plan is among the best I've ever seen."
Â
Herasme is the third Marist student-athlete to earn this honor from the MAAC this season:
Â
- Oct. 14: Murray Coueslant, men's swimming & diving
- Nov. 18: Skylar Harrison, volleyball
Â
Marist (5-1 overall, 3-1 MAAC) is off to its best six-game start since the 1998-99 season. The Red Foxes return to action with a two-game series against Niagara (3-3, 2-2) on Friday and Saturday at McCann Arena. Tip-off for both games is set for 2 p.m.
