BUFFALO, New York – The Preliminaries of the final day of the swimming and diving Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships are complete, and Marist is sending nine swimmers and three divers to the finals later this evening.
Three swimmers from the women's team and six swimmers from the men's team, as well as three men's divers, will be competing for a chance at a gold medal beginning tonight at 6 p.m.
Currently, both teams are sitting in second place in their respective brackets. The women are just 20 points behind leader Fairfield, 419-399. Meanwhile, the men have some ground to make up later tonight, trailing nine-time defending champion Rider, 479.5-331.
- The women started the fourth day swimmingly, qualifying three swimmers in the first event which was the 200-yard back. Molly Hewett led the way, coming in second with a time of 2:03.25, and Juliet Nowak and Veronica Stureborg finished in third and seventh, respectively.
- Danielle Cianciotto finished ninth in the 200-yard breast with a time of 2:26.77.
- Georgeanne Zimmerman also came in ninth in the 100-yard free, clocking in at 53.08.
- The men started out strong in the 200-yard back, as Ryan Kaplan finished in third, qualifying for the finals with a time of 1:49.27.
- Ahmed Sallam straight up dominated the 100-yard free, coming in first place in the prelims with a time of 45.01. Ethan McCormac also qualified, coming in fifth place.
- Three Red Fox divers qualified for the finals in the 1-meter boards. Raislan Aiken led the way, coming in second place with a score of 247.85, meanwhile David Gallino and Tyler Wenzel finished in fifth and sixth, respectively.
- Jackson Klarsfeld advanced to the finals in the 200-yard breast, tying for fifth place with a time of 2:03.67.
- The Red Foxes closed out the day, qualifying two swimmers in the 200-yard fly, and ensureing they qualified someone in every event for the day. Murray Coueslant came in fifth with a time of 1:50.39, and Adam Kapusta finished right behind him in sixth place.
The finals for the 200-yard back, 100-yard free, 200-yard breast, 200-yard fly, men's 1-meter dive, and the 400-yard free relay will begin at 6 p.m. later tonight.
