Men's Lacrosse Pummels Hartford

Joe Tierney Leads the Way for the Red Foxes with a Career-High Five Goals

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's lacrosse team defeated the Hartford Hawks, 14-6, on Tuesday night. For the second straight game, the Red Fox defense was able to hold its opponent scoreless for nearly 30 minutes, allowing them to pull away early in the second quarter.
 
With the win, Marist improves to 3-1 on the season, and remains undefeated at Tenney Stadium. Meanwhile, Hartford drops to 1-3 with the loss, with its only victory coming over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Canisius.
 
 
SUMMARY
  • Hartford gained control in the first quarter, as a goal from Nicholas Vazquez put them in front 1-0.
  • Jason Intermesoli got Marist on the board in the first quarter, evening up the score at 1-1.
  • The Red Foxes and Hawks traded goals for the remainder of the first, which led to a tie at 3-3 heading into the second quarter.
  • Jojo Pirreca and Joe Tierney scored back-to-back goals to begin the second quarter, putting Marist in front 5-3.
  • Justin Tkachuk scored for Hartford at the 3:14 mark of the second quarter to trim the lead to 5-4, but from that point the Red Fox defense took over the game.

  • Tierney had a game-high five goals, and added two ground balls and one caused turnover.
  • Intermesoli matched a game-high with five points, scoring four goals and adding an assist.
  • Chris Schlappich also scored two goals, while Jamison Embury, Kellen Pulera, and Jojo Pirreca each chipped in with one goal apiece.
  • Peyton Smith went 13-21 on face-offs and scooped up a game-high seven ground balls. Meanwhile, JT Roselle had five ground balls.
  • Sam Ahlgrim, Kurt Wessner, and Kyle Stofko each had two caused turnovers leading the strong defensive effort.
  • Jake MacGregor had 10 saves in net for Marist, and a .714 save percentage.
  • Tyler Corpora led the Hawks with two goals.
  • The Red Foxes won the turnover battle, only coughing it up 11 times, while the Hawks turned it over 19 times.
  • Marist outshot Hartford, 52-33.

NOTES
  • The Red Foxes are no 3-8 all-time against the Hawks, with two of the wins coming in the last two times they faced off.
  • This is the first time Marist has begun the season 3-0 at Tenney Stadium since 2013.
  • The Red Foxes are off to their best overall start since beginning the season 4-1 in 2017.
  • Intermesoli's four goals marked a new career-high, as did his five points.
  • The five goals for Tierney also set a new career-high for the senior midfielder.
  • Pulera's goal in the fourth quarter was the first of his collegiate career.
