SAN DIEGO, California - #24 Marist water polo faced talented competition on day one of the Triton Invitational, but ultimately fell in a pair of games. The Red Foxes were defeated 14-5 by the hosts #7 UC San Diego, and then dropped a match to the neighboring #21 San Diego State by a score of 8-5.Â

- The Red Foxes fell behind in the first period, and though they outscored the Tritons 3-2 in the second, they could not keep up the momentum for the comeback.
- Viktoria Orlova and Shinae Carrington led Marist in points with two each. Orlova tallied a goal and an assist, while Carrington handed out two assists.
- India Alter scored a goal and drew two exclusions on the #7 Tritons.
- Justine Castro recorded a goal, a drawn exclusion and a steal.
- Lauren Smith and Kathryn McCullough each found the net once.
- Carsen Horvatich stopped four shots and grabbed three steals against UC San Diego's high-powered offense.
- The Aztecs led by as many as six goals in the fourth, but the Red Foxes caught fire with three straight goals to trim the deficit. Despite their late surge, time ran out before Marist could take back the lead.
- Anais Mathes tallied two goals in a strong performance from the senior.
- Myriam Lizotte found the net twice as well for her second multi-goal game of the season.
- Carolyn Gauvin beat the defense once on a behind-the-back shot.
- Horvatich held down the net with nine stops for a save percentage of .529.
The Triton Invitational continues as the Red Foxes prepare to face MAAC foe Villanova on Sunday, February 9 at 11 a.m. EST. The winner moves on to face the victor of Pomona-Pizter and UC Santa Clara that afternoon.
