Claire Oberdorf and sophomore
Calista Phippen of the Marist softball team were named College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District on Thursday. The award takes into account career accomplishments and academic performance.
Oberdorf ranks in the top 10 in program history in stolen bases (50, third), triples (seven, tied for sixth), batting average (.329, seventh), runs (106, 10
th), and RBIs (105, 10
th). She is a finalist for the Marist Athletics Department's
Sportsperson of the Year and
Strength & Conditioning awards. Oberdorf was the Red Foxes' leading hitter at .379 this season. In 2016, she was named a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top 10 Freshman and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rookie of the Year as she helped lead the Red Foxes to a MAAC championship. She also was a five-year member of the Marist women's basketball program, and appeared in 97 career games with 53 starts. She is an Applied Mathematics major.
Phippen was named an NFCA Top 25 Freshman, MAAC Co-Rookie of the Year, First Team All-MAAC, and Second Team All-Region in 2019. In her two seasons as a Red Fox, Phippen has a 23-8 record with a 1.73 earned run average and 238 strikeouts. Her earned run average ranks second in program history, and the strikeout total is 10
th. She is a Computer Science major who has been named to Marist's Dean's List in all three of her prior semesters.
The Marist Athletics Department has had nine Academic All-District selections in the 2019-20 school year. Prior to Oberdorf and Phippen, Jillian Colucci (women's soccer), Michael Lorello (men's soccer), Megan Fergus (volleyball), Skylar Harrison (volleyball), Grant Dixon (football), Jack Griffith (football), and Rebekah Hand (women's basketball) were honored.
This is the first career CoSIDA Academic All-District honor for both Oberdorf and Phippen. St. John's was the only other school to have multiple selections to the Academic All-District Team.
To be eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-District consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.30 on a 4.0 scale, and be of at least sophomore standing while having spent two prior semesters at the institution. Both Oberdorf and Phippen are now eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-American honors, which will be announced on June 11.
