POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist water polo team defeated the Iona Gaels 17-9 on Thursday evening. The Red Foxes outscored the Gaels in every quarter en route to the eight-point victory.
With the win, Marist improves to 2-0 on the year. Meanwhile, Iona falls to 2-3 this season. .
- The Red Foxes got out to a quick 5-3 lead after the first quarter, and would not relinquish that lead for the rest of the game.
- In a strong defensive second quarter, Marist was able to score three goals while holding Iona to just a single goal and take a 8-4 lead into the lockeroom at halftime.
- Marist didn't give up any momentum in the second half, quickly scoring a couple goals to increase its lead.
- By the end of the third quarter Marist had a 13-6 lead.
- The Red Foxes outscored Iona 4-3 in the fourth quarter, and cruised to a 17-9 win.
- Marina Hyham made 13 saves in the victory.
- Myriam Lizotte scored three more goals, bringing her total to six on the season. She added two assists for a total of five points to lead the team.
- Shinae Carrington also scored three goals in the game, tying for the team-lead.
- Viktoria Orlova and Lauren Smith were the other Marist players with double-figure goals, scoring two each. Orlova also had two assists.
The Red Foxes return to Poughkeepsie for their first home games of the season on Saturday, April 24. Three games are scheduled for the day, including a rematch against the Gaels and two games against the Virginia Military Institute. Game times are scheduled for 10 a.m., 4 p.m., and 7 p.m.
