SANTA CLARA, California - The Marist Water Polo team won the first two games of the Santa Clara Invitational on Saturday afternoon, extending their win streak to four games.
In game 1, Marist got the best of Monterey Bay from the start. After jumping out to 7-5 halftime lead, the Red Foxes kept the hot scoring going in the third quarter, scoring five goals to take a 12-7 lead into the final frame.
Ella Baumgarten and
Viktoria Orlova paced the Red Foxes, each scoring three goals in the victory. In total, eight Red Foxes were able to find the back of the net including two goals each from
Kaylee Brard and
Madeline Schultz.
Marina Hyham and
Emily Hilliard combined for 6 saves and 2 steals in the net to secure the win.
In game 2, Marist got the goals started early, taking a 8-3 lead into halftime after holding the Santa Clara Broncos scoreless in the second quarter. The Red Foxes out-shot Santa Clara 35-27, and were able to capitalize on seven out of ten power plays (.700). On the other hand, Santa Clara was only successful on one power play throughout the game, despite having 7 chances.
Madeline Schultz and
Viktoria Orlova were able have success scoring yet again, scoring 4 goals and 2 goals respectively.Â
Fallon Burnworth had four points (1 goal, 3 assists), as the Red Foxes defeated Santa Clara, 14-8.
Marist is back in action at the Santa Clara Invitational on Sunday as they take on Pacific at 1:30 p.m. and Cal-State East Bay at 5:00 p.m., looking to extend their winning streak to six games.Â
