Marist Softball Hosts Two Home MAAC Doubleheaders

Red Foxes Face Iona on Wednesday, Monmouth on Saturday

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist softball team will open its home schedule with a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheaders this week.
 
The Red Foxes will host Iona on Wednesday in a makeup of Saturday's postponed games. First pitch of game one is set for 2 p.m. This will mark the Red Foxes' first Pride Game, and is also a Code Red event for students.
 
Marist will then face Monmouth for a Saturday doubleheader, with first pitch of game one starting at noon.
 
About Marist
  • Marist is 14-20 overall and 2-2 in MAAC play.
  • Marist had both of its doubleheaders this past weekend against Iona (April 9) and Fairfield (April 10).
  • Marist dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Drexel on Tuesday, falling 12-11 in eight innings and 9-6. Alyssa Grupp had seven hits in both games combined, while Sam Freeland had five.
  • Following her seven-hit performance, Grupp was named MAAC Player of the Week on April 12.
  • In her last 10 games, Freeland is 19-for-35 (.543) with eight multi-hit games. She has at least two hits in five straight contests.
  • Freeland leads the Red Foxes with a .373 batting average.
  • Caroline Baratta leads Marist in home runs (five), RBIs (25), and runs scored (21).

About Iona
  • Iona is 13-14 overall and 3-1 in-conference. The Gaels have won six of their last seven games.
  • In addition to having its doubleheader at Marist called off last weekend, the Gaels' doubleheader at Siena scheduled for April 10 was also postponed.
  • In last year's season series, Iona won three out of four against the Red Foxes.
  • This is the first time Iona has played at Marist since 2019. The teams split the two-game regular-season series, and Marist prevailed 2-1 in a MAAC Tournament contest.
  • In MAAC play, Iona has beaten Rider once and Monmouth twice.
  • As a team, Iona is hitting .219. The Gaels have hit 18 homers and scored 92 runs this season.
  • Jessica Chilcott leads the team with a .298 batting average, seven homers and 21 RBIs.
  • As a pitching staff, Iona has an ERA of 3.06.
  • Kara Zazzaro leads with a 2.37 ERA over 94.2 innings pitched.
 
About Monmouth
  • The Hawks are 6-28 overall and 1-5 in the MAAC.
  • Monmouth went 1-3 this past weekend. The Hawks split a home doubleheader against Niagara, and were swept at home against Canisius.
  • Prior to coming to Marist, Monmouth will play a single game at Columbia on Wednesday, and host Fairfield for a MAAC doubleheader on Friday.
  • The teams split six contests last year. Monmouth went 3-1 in the regular season series, but Marist won both games in the MAAC Championship quarterfinal round.
  • Lindsey Baron leads the Hawks in hitting (.337), runs scored (21), doubles (12), triples (two), and is tied for the team lead with two home runs.
  • As a team, Monmouth is hitting .219 with eight home runs and 94 runs scored.
  • Monmouth has a team ERA of 4.72.
  • Kylie Gletow leads the Hawks in wins (four), innings pitched (108), and ERA (4.28).
  • Billie Kerwood has a team-best 85 strikeouts in 89.1 innings pitched.
 
Schedule Change
  • Marist's doubleheader against Fairfield, originally scheduled for April 10, has been moved to Tuesday, April 19 at Gartland Field.
  • First pitch of game one is set for 2 p.m.
  • These games will the next ones for the Red Foxes following their contests against Iona and Monmouth this week.
