POUGHKEEPSIE, New York -Â The Marist water polo team earned two important MAAC wins on Saturday at McCann Natatorium.
The Red Foxes defeated Iona, 9-5, in their first game of the day. In its second contest, Marist cruised to a 19-5 triumph over VMI.
- After scoring three goals in both the first and second quarter, while holding Iona to just two goals, Marist took a commanding 6-2 lead into the half.
- The Red Foxes slowed down offensively in the third quarter, but also got a number of tough saves from Marina Hyham to keep Iona in check. The Red Foxes entered the fourth quarter leading the Gaels 7-3.
- In the fourth quarter, more tough defense from the Red Foxes fueled a late offensive surge as well, putting in two goals to secure the 9-5 victory.
- Marina Hyham collected 12 saves on the day to propel Marist to a win.
- Viktoria Orlova led the Red Foxes offensively with three goals on four shots. Madeline Schultz and Myriam Lizotte added two goals each, while Ella Baumgarten and Shinae Carrington each scored once.
- Lizotte also got five steals to help the Red Foxes defense.Â
- Coming off the win earlier in the day, the Red Foxes stayed hot offensively, scoring seven goals in the first quarter while shutting VMI out. There was no slowing down in the second quarter, putting five more goals into the back of the net to take a 12-1 lead into the break.
- The third quarter was played tough, with VMI scoring three goals while holding the Red Foxes to just three as well.
- The Red Foxes offense once again broke through in the fourth quarter, scoring four goals en route to a 19-5 victory.
- Viktoria Orlova and Madeline Schultz had their way offensively, each scoring five goals.
- Rachel Dean and Shannon Connolly both scored two goals for the Red Foxes.
- Nine different Red Foxes found the back of the net.
- Marist is now 19-11 (6-2 MAAC) and will look to build upon its four-game win streak with two more MAAC matchups on Sunday.Â
- The Red Foxes take on La Salle at 9 a.m., then travel to Villanova for a matchup with the Wildcats at 4 p.m.
