POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's basketball team swept the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference weekly awards on Monday.
Patrick Gardner was named MAAC Player of the Week, and
Isaiah Brickner was named MAAC Rookie of the Week.
Gardner averaged 28.5 points on .710 shooting from the field and a .909 mark from the free-throw line as Marist swept the Canisius/Niagara trip for the second time in program history and first time in eight years. He is now the MAAC's leading scorer at 18.8 points per game.
On Friday at Canisius, Gardner had 26 points and four rebounds while shooting 11-for-15 from the field, 1-for-3 from three-point range, and 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. On Sunday at Niagara, his 31 points were the most scored by a Red Fox this season in the team's 66-64 win. Gardner hit the game-winning shot with 6.8 seconds remaining and scored Marist's final nine points in the last 2:24. He shot 11-for-16 from the field, 2-for-6 from three-point range, and 7-for-8 from three-point range.
Brickner averaged 7.0 points, 5.0 assists, and 5.0 rebounds while shooting .500 from the field, .500 from three-point range, and 1.000 from the free-throw line. At Canisius on Friday, Brickner had a career-high eight assists, scored nine points, had five rebounds, and added one steal. He shot 7-for-7 from the free-throw line to extend his streak of consecutive made free throws to 28. Brickner helped the Red Foxes achieve the highest point total, field goal percentage, and margin of victory at Canisius. At Niagara on Sunday, he had five points, a team-leading five rebounds, and tied for the team lead with two assists. He shot 2-for-3 from the field and drained his only three-point attempt.
These awards were the first earned by the Red Foxes this season.
Marist (7-9 overall, 3-4 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference), which has won three straight, returns to action on Friday when the Red Foxes host Saint Peter's (7-11, 2-7) at McCann Arena. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. Tickets are available
