Softball Opens Season Friday at Winthrop Eagle Classic

Red Foxes To Play Five Games Over Ensuing Three Days

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist softball team opens the 2023 season on Friday, as the Red Foxes begin play in the Winthrop Eagle Classic.
 
Tournament Schedule
  • Friday, Feb. 17 – North Carolina A&T, 3 p.m.; Winthrop, 5 p.m.
  • Saturday, Feb. 18 – Queens, 10 a.m.; Nevada, 12:30 p.m.
  • Sunday, Feb. 19 – Nevada, 9:30 a.m.

  • Fans are encouraged to buy tickets in advance.
  • Cash only will be accepted at the game.

10 Facts
  • The Red Foxes return seven of their nine primary starters offensively, and 12 of their 17 total hitters. All four pitchers are back from last season.
  • The coaching staff has two returners and one addition:
    • Joe Ausanio begins his 15th season as head coach. The season opener against North Carolina A&T will mark his 700th game.
    • Kristin Erb will be in her second season as assistant coach. Erb works the Red Foxes' pitchers.
    • Caroline Baratta is in her first season as assistant coach. Baratta is the Red Foxes' all-time hits leader and was a two-time MAAC Defensive Player of the Year award winner and four-time First Team All-MAAC selection.
  • Junior Alyssa Grupp was a Preseason All-MAAC selection as the Red Foxes were picked second in the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • The Red Foxes will have four captains: graduate pitcher Calista Phippen, senior outfielder Shea Walsh, senior pitcher Meghan Haff, and junior third baseman Miah McDonald.
  • Marist was 25-30 overall last season and 11-9 in MAAC play. In the 13 years Marist has played a MAAC schedule under Ausanio, the Red Foxes have had a winning record 11 times.
  • Marist had two major award winners last season. Baratta was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight year, and Maddie Pleasants was named MAAC Co-Rookie of the Year.
  • Baratta and McDonald were both First Team All-MAAC selections last year. Grupp, Phippen, and Walsh were named Second Team All-MAAC. Pleasants was a unanimous MAAC All-Rookie Team selection. Grupp and McDonald were named to the MAAC All-Championship Team.
  • Phippen enters the 2023 season ranked second in program history in career ERA (1.95), fourth in strikeouts (401), and sixth in wins (39).
  • Marist will take part in five tournaments each of the next five weekends.
  • The Red Foxes start MAAC play on Saturday, April 1 at home against Niagara.
 
Up Next
  • Marist will travel to Hawaii for a tournament next weekend.
  • The Red Foxes will play two games each next Friday, Saturday, and Sunday as they will face Seattle, Hawaii, and St. Bonaventure.
  • This is the Red Foxes first trip to Hawaii since 2017.
