Marist Announces Leadership Change in Tennis

Sussman Will Not Return as Director of Tennis, Will Retain PA Duties & Add Teaching Assignments

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Marist Director of Athletics Tim Murray has announced a change in leadership in the tennis programs. Gary Sussman will not return as Director of Tennis.

Sussman was hired as head coach of Marist's women's tennis program in the fall of 2017. A year later, he was promoted to Director of Tennis. In this role, he served as head coach of both the women's and men's programs for the past five seasons.

In 2018, Sussman guided the women's program to a berth in the MAAC final. The team then reached the MAAC semifinals in 2019. In Sussman's tenure, the men's program advanced to the MAAC semifinals in 2019, 2021, and 2023. Following a month-long campus pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the spring of 2021, tennis became the first Marist program to successfully compete both on and off campus under Sussman's leadership, paving the way for more spring teams to return to active competition.

Sussman will continue to serve as the lead public address announcer for the Marist Department of Athletics. He currently teaches in Marist's School of Communication and the Arts and will be expanding his course load.

A national search for Sussman's replacement will begin immediately.
