LEXINGTON, Virginia- The Marist water polo team began official MAAC play at the VMI-MAAC Classic, Friday afternoon. The Red Foxes fell against the defending MAAC Champions, Wagner, 10-7.
Samantha Bentley led the Red Foxes with two goals in the match against Wagner.
The Red Foxes moved to 10-8 overall and 0-1 in MAAC play.
- Quarter One:
- Wagner struck first in the quarter with a goal with 6:34 to play.
- The Red Foxes evened the game at 1-1 with a goal from Paige Naegle with 2:35 to play in the quarter.
- With a minute left in the quarter, Wagner scored their second goal of the game. The Red Foxes trailed 2-1 at the end of the first quarter.
- Second Quarter:
- Wagner began the second quarter with two unanswered goals, as the Red Foxes trailed 4-1 early in the quarter.
- The Red Foxes countered with back-to-back goals from Alyssa Mullane and Kendell De Beer, which cut into the Wagner lead 4-3.
- Wagner ended the half with two-straight goals. The Red Foxes trailed 6-3 at halftime of the match.
- Third Quarter:
- The Red Foxes and Wagner scored no goals in the third quarter.
- Fourth Quarter:
- The Red Foxes opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with a goal from Bentley. The Red Foxes cut into the lead at 6-4.
- Wagner followed by scoring two unanswered goals, which made the Red Foxes deficit 8-4.
- Bentley scored her second goal of the quarter, which cut into the Wagner lead 8-5.
- Rachel Dean added a second consecutive goal for the Red Foxes late in the fourth quarter. Dean's goal cut the Red Foxes deficit to 8-6.
- Wagner scored a goal with 2:15 to go in the match, extending their lead 9-6.
- Ella Baumgarten scored her first goal of the match with 1:53 to go, and cut the Wagner lead to 9-7.
- Wagner closed the match with a goal, as the Red Foxes fell 10-7.
- Samantha Bentley led the Red Foxes with two goals in the match.
