LAWRENCEVILLE, New Jersey – The Marist University women's lacrosse team defeated Rider by a score of 18-12 in its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener on Saturday.
The Red Foxes scored six straight goals between the first and second quarters, and they added five more consecutive ones from late in the third into the fourth.
- After nine minutes, Rider held a 3-2 lead, with Chloe Birckhead and Anne Shine scoring for Marist.
- The Red Foxes then answered with six straight goals, with four coming in the first quarter. Gaven had two, while Shine added another, and Caitin McNaboe closed out the first period scoring with 21 seconds remaining.
- Marist led 6-3 after 15 minutes.
- Marist's lead jumped to 8-3 with goals by Alana Tavares and Gaven, who scored her third of the contest at the 12:49 mark.
- Rider answered with four straight goals to cut its deficit to one.
- Shine and McNaboe scored within 23 seconds of each other to extend the Red Foxes' lead to 10-7.
- Marist led 10-8 at halftime.
- Marist scored the first three goals of the second half, with Birckhead, Shine, and Gaven combining to make the score 13-8.
- Rider scored its lone goal of the quarter at the 2:24 mark, but Alana Tavares scored the final goal of the period with 18 seconds remaining.
- Marist led 14-9 after 45 minutes.
- Marist scored the first four goals of the quarter with tallies from Jesse Manger, Shine (twice), and McNaboe.
- Rider scored the game's final three goals, but the Red Foxes kept the Broncs off the scoreboard for a stretch of 15:11 between the third and fourth quarters.
- Gaven had a team-best seven points, with four goals and three assists.
- Shine had a team-high six goals.
- Manger finished a goal and a team-high four assists for a five-point day.
