HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Marist women's soccer team battled back in the second half but came up just short in a 2-1 loss at Colgate on Thursday night at Beyer-Small Field.
The Raiders (1-0-1) opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Josie Tunney finished a pass from Ava McCloskey to give the home side the early edge. Marist goalkeeper
Maddy Catalanotti made three first-half saves to keep the Red Foxes within striking distance as the teams went into the break at 1-0.
Colgate doubled its advantage in the 67th minute on a goal from defender Nikki DiCaprio, who converted following a corner kick sequence.
The Red Foxes (0-2-0) responded with their best spell of the match. In the 78th minute, junior forward
Jillian Garcia cut the deficit in half, finishing off a well-worked play assisted by
Julia Loncar and
Gabby Tirado. The goal marked Garcia's first of the season and highlighted an improved second-half attack that saw Marist generate six of its seven shots after halftime. Tirado led the way with five shots, including three on target.
Marist pressed for an equalizer late, but Colgate goalkeeper Ella Poppinga came up with key saves to preserve the win. Catalanotti finished with three saves for the Red Foxes in the effort.
Marist will look to bounce back in its home opener on Sunday, Aug. 24, when the Red Foxes host NJIT at Tenney Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.

I thought the group showed a lot of positive growth over this last week at training and from our first game. It was great to get a goal on the board and fight through the second half with good flank play. Unfortunately, we still took too long to get our feet under us and need to focus on that as we continue to gain more experience moving forward.
