QUEENS, N.Y. – The Marist volleyball team opened play at the Carnesecca Classic on Friday afternoon, falling in straight sets to St. John's (25-11, 25-22, 25-19).
The Red Foxes (1-6) found their footing after a slow start, pushing the Red Storm in the second and third sets before ultimately coming up short.
Eden Bristow paced the attack with seven kills, while classmate
Sara Dasic added six on a .250 hitting percentage. Setter
Caelyn Dumas directed the offense with 19 assists and chipped in four digs.
Taylor Miller provided six kills and seven points, and libero
Haylee Wenner anchored the defense with a team-high 13 digs.
St. John's (1-6) was led by Erin Jones, who had a match-high 15 kills on .520 hitting. As a team, the Red Storm hit .337 compared to Marist's .112.
In its second match of the day at the Carnesecca Classic, the Marist volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Delaware State (25-16, 25-17, 25-23).
The Red Foxes (1-7) showed improvement throughout the match, nearly forcing a fourth set in a tightly contested third frame. Sara Dasic led the way offensively with a team-high 13 kills, while Mallory Reck added seven and Taylore Miller chipped in four.
Setter Caelyn Dumas tallied 24 assists and four digs, while libero Haylee Wenner contributed five digs in the back row. Sarah Bumstead was effective at the net, hitting .400 with two kills and a block.
Delaware State (4-4) hit .322 as a team and was paced by Gerren Tomlin, who posted 11 kills. The Hornets' balance and efficiency proved decisive, holding off Marist's late push in the third set.
