Tempe, AZ – The Marist Water Polo team traveled west to Tempe, Arizona, for the ASU Invitational where they went 3-1 on the weekend.
Kendell De Beer had a big first match with five goals and two steals leading the Red Foxes to a 16-11 victory over University of the Pacific to start the weekend 1-0.
In the second match of the weekend the Red Foxes would fall to the Sun Devils 5-16.
Jolanta Szentpaili and
Anita Radaelli both had a goal and an assist in the loss.
Samantha Bentley led the Red Foxes to a big upset win over #10 Fresno State with four goals and two assists in the win.
Szentpali and Bentley both score three goals, and
Lela McCarroll scored two goals and two assists to defeat #19 SDSU 14-13.
- Both teams saw the most action in the first quarter with 12 goals scored combined, but the Red Foxes would have a 7-5 lead at the end of the quarter.
- Quarter number two things slowed down, and both teams would trade goals, and Marist would maintain an 8-6 lead going into halftime.
- After the break, the scoring would pick up again and the Red Foxes would score another five goals in the quarter to go up 13-9.
- In the final quarter Marist would outscore University of the Pacific to maintain the lead and ultimately earn a 16-11 victory.
- The Red Foxes would fall behind early in the match, only scoring one goal in the first quarter, trailing 3-1.
- In the second quarter Marist would get shut out and fall into a bigger deficit, now trailing 8-1 going into halftime.
- After the half ASU would keep their momentum going and score five goals to Marist's one.
- In the fourth, both Marist and ASU would score three goals but it wouldn't be enough and the Red Foxes would fall to the Sun Devils 5-16.
- In the first quarter the Red Foxes fell behind, scoring three goals while the Bulldogs scored four.
- The fight didn't stop there, Marist would go goal for goal with Fresno in the second quarter with both teams netting four goals going into halftime.
- Coming out of halftime the Red Foxes would pick up the momentum and shut out the Bulldogs in the third quarter while scoring another three goals to go up 10-8.
- In the final quarter the battle continued but the Red Foxes would fend off the Bulldogs to win the game 13-10, upsetting the #10 team in the nation.
- The Red Foxes and Aztecs would trade goals, scoring three a piece in the first quarter of the match.
- In the second quarter the Red Foxes would pick up the momentum and score five goals to go up 8-5 going into the half.
- After halftime SDSU would attempt a comeback, scoring five goals to Marist's two. The game would once again be tied, this time at 10 a piece.
- The fourth quarter would go back and forth but the Red Foxes would finish it off and win the match 14-13.

Next weekend, Feb. 13-14, the Red Foxes stay out west for the Bronco Invitational to face San Jose State University and CSUN on Saturday and Santa Clara University and Pomona-Pitzer on Sunday.
