POGHKEEPSIE, New York – After a dominant regular season, Marist Water Polo gets ready for the MAAC Championships this weekend, April 11-12. The Red Foxes finished the regular season with a phenomenal 24-5 overall record and a perfect 8-0 conference record.
- The Red Foxes started the season with three straight wins while taking down two ranked opponents, Wagner and Brown, in the process before dropping their first match to #13 ranked Princeton.
- Following a hot start, Marist would go onto win three of their next five matches, highlighted by a big upset win over #10 ranked Fresno State on February 8.
- The Red Foxes than ripped a hot streak of six straight wins, outscoring opponents 84-53 along the way. This win streak would come to an end when they lost to #13 Harvard in early March.
- This loss would only motivate Marist, and they would go on a phenomenal stretch winning 12 straight matches. They were hot when it counted beating all MAAC opponents in this stretch to secure the top spot in the regular season standings.
- The Red Foxes closed the regular season with a non-conference match against #12 ranked Princeton where they lost a hard-fought battle.
The four top teams in the MAAC qualified for the tournament and the seeding and conference records are as follows:
- #1 Marist University (8-0)
- #2 Villanova University (7-1)
- #3 Wagner College (6-2)
- #4 La Salle University (5-3)
- Match one, 1:00 p.m. ET: #2 Villanova vs. #3 Wagner
- Match two, 4:00 p.m. ET: #1 Marist vs. #4 La Salle
- The Explorers finished the regular season with an overall record of 14-6 and a conference record of 5-3.
- Most recently they played three matches at the VMI Invitational where they went 2-1.
- Match one vs Marist: 9-3, loss.
- Match two vs Iona: 14-13, win.
- Match three vs Siena: 11-8, win.
- The VMI Invite was the only time the Explorers and Red Foxes matched up in the regular season.
The winner of #2 Villanova vs #3 Wagner will face the winner of #1 Marist vs #4 La Salle, on Sunday, April 12, at 1:00 p.m. ET where a champion will be crowned.
