EDISON, N.J. – Marist University men's soccer junior captain Chris Verheul was named Metro Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week following the Red Foxes' 4-1 victory over the University of San Francisco on Monday. Verheul led the Red Foxes with one goal and one assist in the victory.
The weekly honor is the first of the season for the Red Foxes, who have won two straight games while scoring eight goals over that span. Monday's victory marked the first all-time meeting between Marist and San Francisco.
Verheul doubled Marist's lead in the 31st minute. Junior Evan Marques launched a ball up the field toward the San Francisco goalkeeper, forcing him to come off his line. Verheul side-stepped the keeper with a touch before firing the ball into the back of the net.
In the 51st minute, Verheul set up his brother, junior Gijs Verheul, who took a touch before blasting a shot from well outside the 18-yard box into the back of the net to make it 3-0 Marist.
The Red Foxes return to action Tuesday, Sept. 15, when they host UAlbany at Tenney Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
