October 13, 2000 -- Red Fox leading scorer, junior Joseph Crespo (Bolton, CT/Bolton), lifted the Marist Men's Soccer team (7-8, 3-3 MAAC) to a 2-1 overtime victory in MAAC competition over Niagara University (0-12, 0-4 MAAC) to keep the Purple Eagles winless on the season. The win breaks Marist's three game losing streak and keeps the Red Foxes undefeated on North Field (3-0).
Junior forward Sean Murphy (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) ignited the Red Fox scoring drive with a goal at 70:29 reaching the left side on the net, as senior midfield Brian Karcz (South Huntington, NY/Walt Whitman) and Crespo directed the ball to the center of the Purple Eagle net to earn the assists. Niagara forward Ricky Fleck retaliated with an unassisted goal at 79:33 to tie the game and force sudden death overtime.
The Red Foxes came back strong, controlling the field throughout the overtime stanza. With time expiring, Crespo charged the Purple Eagle net from the left side to sail the ball past Niagara netminder Guillermo Rodriguez into the upper left corner for his eighth goal of the year.
Red Fox goalkeeper Carlos DeBrito (Union, NJ/St. Benedict's Prep.) recorded three saves on nine Purple Eagle shots, while Rodriguez registered 11 saves on 15 Marist attempts on net.
The Marist men's soccer team return to the field on Sunday, October 1nd to face MAAC competitor Canisius in their last home game of the season. Seniors Karz and goalkeeper Seth Tyminksi (Gales Ferry, CT) will be honored prior to the start of Sunday's game in a Senior Day Ceremony.
