Poughkeepsie, NY-Junior Brett Biggs (Bethlehem, PA) connected on a 32-yard field goal in the first overtime to give the Marist College football team a 38-35 overtime victory over visiting Georgetown University, this afternoon on Leonidoff Field in the annual homecoming game. The victory marks the first time in eight meetings that Marist has beaten Georgetown, and is also the first win of the season, as the Red Foxes improve to 1-5 on the year.
Marist struck first, scoring 21 points in the first 13:53 of the game, taking a 21-0 lead with 1:07 left in the first quarter. Quarterback Kevin Bielen (Glen Rock, NJ), who finished 7-18 for 99 yards, started the scoring with an eight-yard strike to Sean Stellato (Salem, Mass.). Bielen then rushed for a five-yard score, and Alfredo Riullano (Calliccon, NY) had a 21-yards touchdown run.
Georgetown struck as the first quarter ended with a 27-yard touchdown pass to John Sims, from Sean Peterson. Peterson would complete 22 passes on the afternoon, throwing for 251 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Hoyas (2-5) closed the gap to 21-14 with a Dave Paulus pass to Luke McArdle. Marist closed the first half with a 14-yard touchdown run from Riullano, going into the intermission 27-14.
Georgetown took control of the game early in the third quarter as Peterson scored from a yard out, and the Dawon Dicks scampered from six-yards out to take a 28-27 lead. Peterson threw his second touchdown pass of the day, to Aaron Brown, to close out the Hoya scoring, and make the score 35-27.
Marist rallied in the fourth quarter, as Chris Price (Danbury, Conn.) ran into the end zone from 51-yards out, and then scampered in from two-yards out for the two-point conversion, tying the score 35-35.
Ike Ibeh (Bloomfield, NJ) intercepted the Hoyas third down pass on the first possession of the overtime period, setting up the Biggs heroics.
Price finished the game with a game high 159 yards rushing, followed by Riullano, who left the game early with an injury, but still finished with 108 yards rushing. Marist, who had 488 total yards offense, rushed for 389 yards. The Hoyas finished with 323 total yards, 308 of them coming in the air.
Marist turned the ball over four times, forcing three Hoya turnovers.
Georgetown kicker Marc Samuel missed five field goals on the afternoon, including one with two seconds left in the game, which would have given the Hoyas the win.
Marist will take to the road next week to take on Caniusis, Saturday, November 3rd. Game time is set for 1:30 pm.
