Poughkeepsie, NY - Marist College sophomore goalkeeper John Balzarini (Holbrook, NY) was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Men's Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week, it was announced by the league office this afternoon.
Balzarini, a graduate of Sachem High School, recorded 14 saves and had a goals against average of 0.50 in the Red Foxes' wins over St. Peter's and Manhattan last week, which were his fourth and fifth career starts as a collegiate goalkeeper. Balzarini recorded the first shutout of his collegiate career and collected seven saves in the 2-0 win over St. Peter's. Against Manhattan, Balzarini recorded seven saves and allowed only one goal in the 2-1 victory.
Balzarini started out the season as a defender, but has made a smooth transition to goalkeeper. He currently has a record of 3-1-1, while allowing only four goals since taking over as the starting goalkeeper for the Red Foxes. He has recorded 44 saves on the season for a goals against average of 0.77, while playing 470 minutes in goal.
The Red Foxes are now 4-7-1 on the season, with a 3-1 record in the MAAC, which is good for a first place tie with Loyola. The men's soccer team returns to action on Friday, October 25th, when they travel to Rider for a 3:00 p.m. match.
