Herodes, Machado Honored As Coach, Rookie Of Year In MAAC

Nov. 14, 2002

Lawrenceville, NJ - Marist College head men's soccer coach, Bobby Herodes and freshman Bruno Machado were honored as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Coach and Co-Rookie of the Year, it was announced at the tournament banquet hosted at Rider University. Joe Crespo earned First-Team All-MAAC honors, while David Musinski was named to the All-MAAC Second Team, and Tomislav Rogic earned MAAC All-Rookie Team accolades.

Herodes led a young Red Fox squad to the number three seed in this weekend's MAAC Tournament, posting six wins in the league. Marist opened the year at 0-5, before finishing the season strong, going 7-4-1 over the last 12 games of the season, including winning five of the last seven games. The Red Foxes posted a 7-9-1 overall record, going 6-3 in conference play. Herodes is in his seventh season as the head coach at Marist, posting 54 wins in that time. The Coach of the Year honor is his second as a coach in the MAAC, having earned the award in 1995 as head coach at Iona College.

Machado enjoyed a spectacular year as a freshman, adding an offensive punch to the Marist attack. The rookie forward led the team in all three offensive categories this fall, tallying 18 total points. Machado scored seven goals, including a game-winner, and assisted on four other goals during the season. He also was named to the All-MAAC Second Team and All-Rookie Team, for his efforts this season.

Crespo returned to the field with a vengeance after missing the team's first four games due to an ankle injury. He finished the year second on the team with 10 total points on three goals and a team-best four assists. It is the third consecutive season that Crespo has earned First Team honors, beginning in the 2000 season, when he was named the conference Player of the Year. Crespo ranks 7th all-time at Marist with 60 career points, and is tied for third in program history with 21 career assists.

Musinski earned All-MAAC Second Team honors after playing in 16 of the Red Foxes games this year and adding seven points. He scored three goals on the year, with two of them proving to be game winning goals. Musinski also added an assist during the regular season campaign.

Rogic was a member of the Red Foxes defensive unit this season, playing in all 17 games as he earned MAAC All-Rookie Team honors. He helped the Red Foxes to a pair of shutouts; including a key 2-0 win over MAAC rival St. Peter's on October 18th. He also added to the Marist offense, assisting on a goal during the season.

The Red Foxes will open the MAAC tournament on Friday, November 15, 2002, taking on the number two seed, Fairfield University. That game will be played on the campus of Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ and is scheduled to begin at 1:30 pm. The top-seed, Loyola College, will play Siena College in the other semi-final, slated to begin at 11:00 am, with the winners meeting on Sunday with an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament awaiting the Tournament Champion.
