Lawrenceville, NJ-The Marist College men's soccer team advanced to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament Championship game today by defeating number two seed Fairfield, 5-4 in penalty kicks.
It was a mid-field battle where the Stags dominated the first half of regulation. After the second half and two overtimes both Mike Valenti (Sicklerville, NJ) of Marist and Andrew Frankel of Fairfield came up with key break away saves to keep the game locked at zeros. The game then went to penalty kicks where Marist's David Musinski (Hicksville, NY), Tomislav Rogic (Boonton, NJ), Joseph Crespo (Bolton, Conn.), Benjamin Castor (Richboro, PA), and Kyle Nunes (Ossining, NY) made their five, respectively, while Fairfield made there first four but the fifth by Spencer Collum was denied by Valenti.
Marist's Valenti notched six saves between the pipes for the Red Foxes. Frankel finished the game with ten saves for the Stags. Marist is now 7-9-2 overall, while Fairfield closed out its season at 9-7-3.
The Red Foxes will now face defending champions, Loyola, on Sunday, November 17th, at 12:00 p.m. on the campus of Rider University.
