Softball Wins Three of Five on Weekend

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - The Marist softball team took three out of five games over the weekend, winning two of three at its own Red Fox Classic this past weekend at Gartland Athletic Complex in Poughkeepsie on Saturday as well as taking one of two at the University of Hartford Tournament on Sunday.

In the opener against St. Francis (N.Y.) on Saturday, a 4-0 Red Foxes win, sophomore Lyndsay Ward tossed a complete game, shutting the Terriers out and striking out seven. Senior outfielder Allison Bartley homered in the first inning and later singled and stole second. Freshman Kathryn McManus had an RBI single and a stolen base.

The second game saw the Red Foxes blank Sacred Heart 7-0. Freshman Megan Rigos went the distance for Marist, fanning five. Bartley went two for four with a stolen base, Ward had two hits and a run scored and junior catcher Jasmery Polanco rapped a single and a double. Freshman first baseman Annie Castellano had a two-run double.

Marist dropped its final contest on Saturday by a 5-0 score to defending Big East champions Seton Hall. Freshman pitcher Kristen Merlino held the Pirates scoreless until the fourth inning. Polanco and junior Bridget Hurlman had base hits for the Red Foxes.

The Red Foxes defeated host Hartford 3-0 in their first game on Sunday as Rigos pitched a complete game three-hit shutout against the Hawks, striking out eight. Ward tripled and scored a run while Bartley had an RBI single and sophomore outfielder Christine Jakobsen had an RBI double.

Marist dropped its final contest of the weekend to Sacred Heart, 5-1. Merlino pitched a complete game and struck out one. Offensively, Bartley led the way with two hits, including a double, and a run scored. Junior Chrystine McHugh pushed across Marist's only run in the seventh inning with a single that scored Bartley. Freshman outfielder Pamela de la Llave collected a base hit.

The team concludes the fall portion of its schedule Saturday, October 16, hosting the Marist Invitational at Gartland Athletic Complex. The Red Foxes will take on Fairleigh Dickinson at 10 a.m., St. Francis (N.Y.) at noon and C.W. Post at 2 p.m.
