Box Score
Lawrenceville, N.J. - Sophomore forward Keith Detelj scored his 10th and 11th goals of the season to lead the third-seeded Marist men's soccer team (10-7) past second-seeded St. Peter's in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference semifinals at Rider's Campus Field.
In the sixth minute, Peacocks goalkeeper Pat Nagawiecki was called for a foul inside the box, resulting in a penalty kick, the first such opportunity for Marist in 2004. Detelj took the penalty kick and blasted it into the back of the net to give the Red Foxes the early lead.
St. Peter's would strike back almost immediately with a penalty-kick goal of its own. When Marist was whistled for a handball in the box just over a minute later, Rich Lesmes converted to tie the game at one.
The score remained tied until the 65th minute, when Detelj's diving header off an entry pass from junior forward Bobby Van Dyke gave Marist the lead for good.
Detelj, who was named to the All-MAAC First Team on Friday, became just the 13th player in school history to score 11 goals in a season. The two scores were also the 19th and 20th of his career. Van Dyke's assist was the fifth of his career.
Senior goalkeeper Mike Valenti made seven saves for Marist while Nagawiecki also made seven saves for the 2003 conference champions.
The Red Foxes advance to the conference finals, where they will take on fourth-seeded Rider. The host Broncs defeated top-seeded Loyola 3-1 in Friday's other semifinal. The title game will start at noon Sunday at Campus Field. The winner will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
