The Marist women's soccer team's postseason run came to a heartbreaking end this afternoon as the squad lost, 2-1 in overtime to #2 Niagara in the MAAC Tournament Semifinals. The Red Foxes, who were seeded sixth in the tournament, were defeated when Niagara's Amber Niece converted a penalty kick just under three minutes into overtime. Marist freshman Anna Case (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) was dynamic in goal, recording 15 saves.
The Red Foxes struck first in the contest when junior Jenna McCrory (N. Kingstown, R.I.) connected off a feed from classmate Justine Caccamo (Bohemia, N.Y.) at 26:01. The assist was Caccamo's second of the tournament, bringing her season scoring total to a team-leading 15 points.
The first half was fairly even, with the Purple Eagles outshooting the Red Foxes just 6-4 and each goalkeeper making two saves.
Marist held the 1-0 lead through halftime and into the early part of the second half. Niagara turned up the offensive pressure in the second and it paid off when Stephanie Gartley scored with an assist from Emily Montgomery at 62:31. The Purple Eagles fired 18 shots in the second half, with Case recording 13 of her total 15 saves in the second period.
Thanks to the efforts of Marist's defense, the game remained a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation. Niagara was awarded a penalty kick just 2:53 into overtime, and Niece capitalized on a rare miss by Case to win the game for her squad.
Caccamo led the Marist offense with three shots overall, two on goal. Brittany Bisnott had five shots on goal to pace the Purple Eagles. Katy Owings recorded two saves in 92:53 minutes.
