Final Stats
Milton, N.Y. -
The visiting Purple Eagles of Niagara came out on top, 3-0 in a hard fought battle with Marist at the Hudson Valley Sports Dome this afternoon. The game, which was moved indoors due to excessive rain in the area, was the first-ever indoor contest in Marist program history.
Niagara came out firing hard in the first half, but the Red Foxes' defense matched up well to keep the game scoreless. Jenna Sporta managed to get her team on the board at 23:00 in the second half with a high shot just past Marist's Liz Herber (Scottsdale, Ariz.). Marist's Justine Caccamo (Bohemia, N.Y.) had quick-thinking play to spoil a free-kick set play by Niagara with 15:00 remaining in the half. The Foxes controlled the ball well in midfield, but the Purple Eagles kept the offensive pressure on, leading to a header off a corner kick from Stephanie Conley at 35:22.
After being outshot 7-2 in the first half, the Red Foxes were firing on all cylinders in the second. The team played hard, taking control of the game for most of the half. Niagara's Michelle Del Monte scored her team's third goal off the rebound from Aisha Eversley's shot. The Purple Eagles took 11 shots to Marist's 10 in the half, but the Red Foxes held possession for much of the half. The Red Foxes kept their intensity up for the entire game, including a goal-saving play by senior Liz Egan (Shelton, Conn.) with just two minutes remaining. Egan made a big defensive stop and clear after goalkeeper Anna Case (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) had punched a ball away for a save.
Both team's received solid play from their goalkeepers in the second half with Niagara's Katy Owings spoiling some big Marist opportunities and grabbing five of her six total saves. Marist's freshman Case was tough in goal again, making seven saves in the second half.
Prior to the contest, Marist honored its five seniors: Egan, Ashley Johnson (Avalon, N.J.) Amanda Kulik (Kinnelon, N.J.), Kat Murray (Pleasanton, Calif.) and Jill Berry (Acton, Mass.)
The Red Foxes drop to 4-9-1 on the season, 3-3 MAAC while Niagara improves to 10-2-2 (4-1 MAAC).
Marist is back in action on Saturday Oct. 15 for a 1:00 p.m. contest at Siena.
