Jamaica, N.Y. - The Marist softball team (20-17) had its eight-game winning streak snapped today, falling 5-2 at St. John's. Scheduled to be a doubleheader, the nightcap was cancelled due to inclement weather in the New York metropolitan area.
The Red Foxes got off on the right foot, putting runners on first and second with one out in the top of the first before junior DP Bridget Hurlman delivered a two-run double.
St. John's (18-28-1) would get a run back in the bottom of the second on RF Jessica Marical's RBI sacrifice bunt, but MAAC Pitcher of the Week Megan Rigos (16-11, 2.48) would hold the Red Storm down until the bottom of the sixth, when three Marist errors sandwiched around three St. John's hits would lead to four runs and the 5-2 win for the Red Storm.
Meghan Allman earned the win as CF Jo Sherlock had two hits and two runs scored for the home team. Junior catcher Jasmery Polanco singled twice for the Red Foxes, as did junior shortstop Katie Eskin. Freshman Alison Catenacci doubled in the top of the seventh for her first career base hit.
The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was called with St. John's leading 1-0 in the second inning.
Marist is back in action on Saturday, hosting MAAC-leading Iona in a doubleheader at Gartland Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
