LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Rider University Broncs snapped Marist's 15 game winning streak on Monday afternoon, by earning a 2-1 win in game one of a double header. Marist rebounded in game two to earn a 9-3 win as Jasmery Polanco (Bay Shore, N.Y.) went 3-4 with five RBI.
The game one loss was Marist's first since it was defeated by Providence 5-4 on March 19 in the championship round of the Mizuno Bash at the Beach Tournament in Georgetown, Del. Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) took the loss for Marist, as she fell to 14-3 on the season. Rigos gave up seven hits over six innings of work and surrendered two earned runs. She struck out five in the game and walked just one.
The game was scoreless for the first three and a half innings, until the Broncs broke through in the home half of the fourth. Jamie Farley led off the frame with a single to left. After she was moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt, Jill Carrabus shot a ball through the right side to drive in Farley for a 1-0 Rider advantage.
Marist would knot the score in the top of the fifth on Annie Castellano's (Happague, N.Y.) third triple of the season. Freshman Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.) led off the inning with a walk and came around to score when Castellano triples to right field. That would be the only run Marist would be able to muster against Rider starter Heather Beintema, who improved to 9-6 on the season.
The score would remain 1-1 until the home half of the sixth, when Farley would again lead off with a single. After a single and a walk loaded the bases, Rider scored the eventual winning run when Rigos hit Mandi Sekly to give Rider its final advantage 2-1.
Marist rebounded in game two and began a new winning streak when it pounded out 11 hits in a 9-3 victory. Marist wasted little time as it plated three runs in the top of the first inning. Chrystine McHugh (Port Ewen, N.Y.) led off the game with her eleventh home run of the season. Later in the frame Polanco would drive out a two-run home run for the quick 3-0 lead.
In the top of the third inning the Foxes pushed across two more runs when Polanco knocked out her second two-run home run of the game to give Marist more then enough run support for starter Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.).
Carpentier would work five innings giving up two hits and three runs, only two were earned. She would strike out five Broncs as opposed to three walks. Rigos would come in for the final two innings to pick up her third save of the season.
The Red Foxes would put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh when Polanco drove in her fifth run of the game on a double and then Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) hit her first career home run, a three run blast to give Marist the 9-3 victory.
With the split on Monday Marist stands at 23-6 on the season and 7-1 in league play. Marist will be back in action when they host Lehigh for a non-conference doubleheader on April 12.
