POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist Women's Softball squad ran its winning streak to 11 games as it swept Saint Peter's in a double header on Sunday afternoon 7-1 and 9-4. Chrystine McHugh (Port Ewen, N.Y.) slugged three home runs on the afternoon and Megan Rigos picked up her twelfth win in game one and her second save in game two.
The Red Foxes fell behind 1-0 on a Meg Papiernak home run in the top of the second, but that would be the only deficit they would face the rest of the afternoon. Marist would take a three-run advantage at 4-1 in the bottom of the second, keyed by a McHugh three-run home run. The Foxes plated the first run of the frame on an RBI single by Bridget Hurlman. After Laurissa Riley (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch, McHugh drove an offering from Saint Peter's starter Michelle Bair deep over the wall in left center for her first of three round trippers on the afternoon.
Marist would add a pair of runs in the fifth keyed by an RBI single by Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.). McHugh would slug her second home run of the game in the sixth to give the Red Foxes the 7-1 win and their tenth straight.
Rigos ran her record to 12-2 on the season as she gave up just the one run over six innings. She struck out four Peahens and walked four.
Marist had three players record multiple hits in game one, led by McHugh who went 3-4 with two runs scored and 4 RBI. Annie Castellano (Happauge, N.Y.) and Giordano each went 2-3 in the game.
In game two of the set Marist hammered three more home runs on its way to the 9-4 victory and its eleventh straight. McHugh added her third round tripper of the day as she led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run to center field.
Marist opened up a 5-0 lead after three innings, as all the runs were driven in via the home run ball. Following McHugh's blast in the first, Hurlman and freshman Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) added two run shots in the second and third innings, respectively.
Freshman Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) earned her fourth win of the season in game two as she went 4.1 innings giving up four earned runs on six hits.
Saint Peter's scored three times in its half of the fifth to cut the Marist lead to 5-4, before Rigos came in for the final 2.2 innings to earn her second save of the season.
Marist would open up another five run lead, at 9-4, with a four run fifth keyed by a two-run double by Katie Eskin (Edison, N.J.).
