POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - After being postponed twice, Marist and Canisius split a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon, with the Foxes winning 3-0 in game one and the Griffs taking game two 2-1 in extra innings. Chrystine McHugh (Port Ewen, N.Y.) connected on her 14th home run on the season in game one.

McHugh would give Marist starting pitcher Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) all the run support she would need when she led off the home first with a ball deep over the right field wall. McHugh would also lace a double in the game, as she went 2-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) would also be 2-3 in the game, as the duo picked up four of the Red Foxes seven hits in the win.

Rigos would pick up her 17th win as she spun her fifth shutout of the season. In seven innings of work, Rigos gave up just four hits as she struck out nine to improve her record to 17-3.

Canisius starter Courtney Piar was also strong in game one, as she fanned 13 Red Foxes, giving up just two earned runs as she fell to 9-6 on the season.

Game two proved to be even more of a pitchers duel, as the teams needed an extra frame to decide the outcome. Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) would go the first five innings for Marist giving up just one unearned run, while striking out six. Canisius' Lindsay Garbacz would go the full eight for the Griffs and would move her record to 7-5.

The Griffs got on the board in the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead. Natalie Osika would lead off the frame with a single through the right side and would move to third on a throwing error on Katie Miranto's sacrifice bunt. Cameron Norton would then follow with an RBI single to give Canisius a lead that would stand until the sixth inning.

In the sixth Marist tied the score when Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) would walk to lead off and move to second on an error. Christine Jakobsen (Midland Park, N.Y.) would come in to pinch run and move to third on a fly out to right field. With one out and runners on the corners, Annie Castellano (Happauge, N.Y.) would lift a fly ball to center to drive in Jakobsen with the tying run.

After a scoreless seventh, the Griffs strung together three straight hits on Rigos who came on in the sixth to relieve Carpentier. Miranto started the charge with a double, and would score the game winning run on Norton's second RBI single of the game. Rigos would strand two runners to keep the game 2-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth.

The Red Foxes would put two runners on in the frame with less then two outs, but could not figure out a way to scratch out a run off of Garbacz.

At 26-7 overall and 8-2 in MAAC play, Marist holds a 1.5 game lead over Canisius for the league's top spot. Marist will look to extend its lead in the league on Saturday when it travels to Siena for a doubleheader with the Saints at 1 p.m.
