LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Chrystine McHugh (Port Ewen, N.Y.) picked up a pair of hits in both ends of a doubleheader that Marist swept 9-0 and 6-1 at Siena on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) added a home run and a triple in the first game as Marist moved to 28-7 overall and 10-2 in MAAC action.
Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) picked up her 18th win of the season in game one, as she went five innings in the shortened game. Rigos struck out seven batters against just one walk in moving to 18-4 on the season.
Marist wasted little time getting on the board, as it hung five runs on the board in the first frame. Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) picked up an RBI single in the inning, before Annie Castellano (Happauge, N.Y.) connected on a grand slam to give Marist the commanding 5-0 lead after one half inning of play.
Marist would post three more runs in the second and a single run in the fourth to shorten the game to five innings and give Marist the 9-0 victory. Green and Castellano would combine to drive in seven of the nine runs in the contest, while McHugh went 2-2 with three runs scored. Katie Eskin (Edison, N.J.) and Jasmery Polanco (Bay Shore, N.Y.) would each add a base hit and a run batted in.
The Red Foxes would strike first in game two as well, when they took a 2-0 lead after the top of the first. The frame was highlighted by a Green RBI double. The freshman would end game two 2-3 with and RBI.
Marist would add two more runs in both the fourth and the seventh to put the game out of reach. Giordano would end game two going 3-4, including a home run and a triple, with two runs scored and one run driven in. McHugh, Eskin and Green all had two hit game and each drove in a run in the 6-1 victory.
Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) picked up the win and moved to 7-2 on the season. She went four innings allowing just three hits and one unearned run. She struck out five Saint batters and did not walk anyone. Rigos came on for the final three frames and struck out three batters.
At 28-7 overall and 10-2 in the MAAC, Marist still holds a 1.5 game lead over Canisius for the league's top spot. Marist will be back in action on Thursday when it hosts Niagara to Poughkeepsie.
