Marist Splits Regular Season Finale With Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Marist Softball squad closed out its regular season with a doubleheader split with Iona on Sunday afternoon. The Foxes fell 3-0 in game one before rebounding for a 4-1 victory in the back end of the twinbill. Bridget Hurlman (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Annie Castellano (Happauge, N.Y.) each connected on their third home runs of the season in the win.

Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was again dominant for the Red Foxes, as she gave up just one hit in taking the loss. Marist could not overcome a sixth inning in which the Gaels scored three times without getting a hit. For the game Rigos went six innings, striking out five and walking one. She gave up three runs, none of which were earned. Rigos fell to 19-5 on the season.

Offensively, Marist was shutdown in game one by Iona starter Becky Riccitelli (6-13) who gave up just two hits. Chrystine McHugh (Port Ewen, N.Y.) and Laurissa Riley (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) picked up the only base hits for Marist in the game.

In game two Marist rebounded to pound out eight hits, half of which went for extra bases. The Red Foxes plated two runs in the third when Castellano connected on her third home run of the season for the 2-0 lead. She would go 2-4 in the contest with a run scored and the two RBI.

Marist would add single runs in the fourth and the fifth on an RBI groundout by Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) and a solo home run by Hurlman, respectively. Giordano would add a double in the game, while Katie Eksin (Edison, N.J.) went 2-4 with a double and a run scored.

Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) improved to 8-3 on the season by picking up the win. She went five innings giving up two hits and one unearned run. She would fan six Gaels and walk no one. Rigos came on for the final two innings for her fourth save of the season. She struck out six of the eight batters she faced.

Marist closes out the regular season at 30-11 overall and 12-4 in MAAC action. The Red Foxes will be back in action next weekend in the MAAC Tournament hosted by Fairfield. Game times are too be announced.
