FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Marist women's tennis team is headed to its first NCAA Tournament in program history. On Sunday, the top-seeded Red Foxes won their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championship with a 4-0 victory over second-seeded Niagara at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Marist junior Christine Ong (Tarzana, Calif.) was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
The Red Foxes earned victories at first, third and fifth singles and also prevailed at first and second doubles to earn the sole doubles point. The matches at second, fourth and sixth singles were not completed since the result of the match had already been determined. Ong earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory at first singles. Junior Erin Godly (Little Silver, N.J.) clinched the victory for the Red Foxes with her 6-1, 6-3 triumph at third singles. Freshman Alexa Strange (Valencia, Calif.) posted a 6-2, 6-0 win at fifth singles.
Ong and Alexa Strange and Godly teamed up for an 8-1 victory at second doubles.
En route to being named Most Outstanding Player, Ong lost a total of just three games in her three matches at first singles, and just five games in her three matches at first doubles while teaming with Cassie Strange over the duration of the tournament.
Marist improved its record to 13-1 on the season, and the victory for the Red Foxes on Sunday was their 12th in a row. The team will learn its NCAA Tournament opponent and destination on Tuesday, May 1 at approximately 2:45 p.m., when the tournament selection show airs on ESPNEWS.
