FLUSHING, N.Y. -- On Saturday at the USTA Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., the #1 seed Marist women's tennis team defeated fifth seeded Loyola 6-1. With the win, the Red Foxes advance to tomorrow's MAAC Championship Match versus Fairfield at 12:00 p.m. Fairfield defeated Niagara in the day's other semifinal.
In first doubles, Erin Godly (Verona, Ky.) and Alexa Strange (Valencia, Calif.) won 8-3 over Kerri Swan and Joy Johnson. Senior Christine Ong (Tarzana, Calif.) and sophomore Cassie Strange (Valencia, Calif.) rolled in second doubles 8-2. They defeated Caitlyn Day and Stephanie Dunn. Natalie Fouché (Queens, N.Y.) won 8-1 in their third doubles match.
Ong cruised 6-0, 6-0 over Day in first singles, and after winning a tough first set 6-4, Godly shut down Kerri Swan 6-0 in the second. Alexa Strange defeated Dunn 7-5, 6-0 out of the fourth slot.
Colon defeated Meaghan McKenna 6-4, 6-3 in fifth singles, and Lauren Cassle knocked off Emily Zampello (Kingwood, Texas) in sixth singles for Loyola's only point of the match.
Marist defeated tomorrow's opponent Fairfield 5-1 earlier this season in Poughkeepsie. The Red Foxes have not dropped a MAAC match, postseason or regular season, in two years.
