PHILADELPHIA, PA. - The Marist men's soccer team allowed three goals in the first 11 minutes of the match, as it fell to La Salle on Saturday afternoon in the team's final non-conference contest of the season. The final score was 4-1. Joe Touloumis (Cranford, N.J.) scored his team-leading third goal of the season for Marist.
The Explorers scored two of their three goals on corners, while the third came off a free kick. Ryan Richter led La Salle with a goal and two assists on the day.
"I was pleased with the way we played in the second half, but I think that today showed we need to mature as a team," head coach Matt Viggiano said. "We need to show up to play for 90 minutes every day."
Marist got on the scoreboard in the 54th minute. Touloumis received a Tim Garger (Garden City, N.Y.) pass at the top of the box. Touloumis hit a low ball that found its way into the net to make the score 3-1, La Salle.
La Salle grew its lead back to three in the 70th minute. Richter headed a pass from Jim Guntle beyond the reach of Marist goalkeeper Tom DeBenedetto (Paramus, N.J.). DeBenedetto made six saves in his second straight start.
As a team the Red Foxes put five shots on goal and took 10 shots. Additionally, Marist held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks in the match.
The Red Foxes return home for the first time since Sept. 4, on Friday, Oct. 9 as Marist opens Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play against the Fairfield Stags. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m., at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field.
