WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Marist softball team snapped a 10-game losing streak as they split a doubleheader with the Army Black Knights on Wednesday evening. In the opening game of the day the Black Knights prevailed 3-2, while in game two, the Red Foxes notched the win, 3-1. Sophomore McCallion Campbell (Port Jevis, N.Y.) hit her first home run of the season, while Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) went 4-for-6 at the plate with a run scored.
In game two, senior Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) got the win in the circle, her first of the season in four appearances. She pitched 5.2 innings, allowed five hits and one earned run. Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) pitched the seventh inning to earn her first save of the season. She ended the game by striking out Erin McClain on a 3-2 pitch with a runner on second.
Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) scored two runs for the Red Foxes to increase her total to 10 runs scored this season.
Marist jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two and never looked back. Giordano led the game off with a walk and would come around to score on a wild pitch. She would score for the second time of the game in the third inning after she led the inning off with a double to right center field. She was plated on a Green single to center.
Malloy added an insurance run in the sixth to get the Red Foxes to the final margin of victory.
In the first game of the twin bill, the Black Knights opened the scoring in the top of the second inning Chava Bobb scored on a single by Reanna Johnson. Marist would answer back in their half of the third when Campbell led the inning off with a solo home run to left field, her first round-tripper of the season. After three innings, the score was tied at one.
The Red Foxes would score a run for a second consecutive inning after Green led the inning off with a double off the base of the left field wall. She was driven in by Nicole DiVirgilio (Aston Sun, Pa.) who also doubled to the left side two batters later.
Marist starter Caitlin Schell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) would set down the side in order in the fourth and fifth innings, retiring six batters in a row. Army answered in the fifth with two runs to take a 3-2 lead, but Schell got a strikeout with the bases loaded to get out of the jam.
Schell took the loss in game one after she pitched 5.2 innings giving up six hits, three earned runs. She struck out three batters on the day.
Freshman Megan Lameuroux (Woonsocket, R.I.) threw out both stolen base attempts by the Black Knights in the first game.
Marist played a solid set of games defensively, as the Red Foxes did not commit an error on the day.
The Red Foxes will travel back to the University of Maryland Baltimore County for two games with the Retrievers and two games against Hampton on Saturday and Sunday, March 14-15.
