Marist And Yale Split Softball Twinbill In New Haven

March 21, 2009

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

NEW HAVEN, CONN. - The Marist softball team continued their 10-game road trip with a doubleheader at Dewitt Family Field on the campus of Yale University on Saturday afternoon. After the Red Foxes won game one, 3-2, they dropped the second game, 4-1. Both Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) and Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) reached base four times in the two games.

Marist jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in game one, as Giordano scored an unearned run on a fielder's choice by Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.). The Bulldogs would tie the score in their half of the first frame on a Megan Enyeart double which scored Ashley Sloan.

The Red Foxes would strike again in the top of the sixth inning, when freshman Nicole DiVirgilio (Aston, Pa.) would drive in Green and Lindsay Durant (Martinsville, N.J.) on a double to left center field.

After starter Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) who shut the door on a Bulldogs comeback. Carpentier retired the only three batters she faced to earn her second save of the season.

Carpentier's second save of the season earned Schell her second consecutive win in the circle. Schell now stands at 2-5 on the season. In game one, the freshman threw six innings, allowed six hits, two earned runs and struck out one batter in the win.

After the game one win, the Red Foxes had won three straight, after they swept Temple on Wednesday in Philadelphia.

Game two proved to be a quieter stretch for the Red Foxes as the team put four hits together for the game. Megan Lamoureux (Woonsocket R.I.) scored the lone run for Marist in the sixth inning on a Malloy single to second base.

However, the four runs that Yale scored in the third inning would prove to be enough of a cushion for Bulldogs starter Deanna DiBernardi.

Giordano reached base on an error in the opening inning of game two. She has now reached base safely in the last 14 games for Marist.

On the week, Marist achieved a 3-1 record to improve to 6-14 overall on the season, having swept the Temple Owls of the Atlantic 10 and taking game one from Yale on Saturday afternoon.

Marist will take to the field on Wednesday, March 25 for a doubleheader with Binghamton. The games are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. in Vestal, N.Y.
